LEDs made with AlInGaP technology require
(photoperiod) influence body weight,
food intake, and may shift circadian
rhythms of blood pressure, heart rate,
and activity. To preserve animals’ natural sleep/wake cycles while researchers
work, the current protocol is to use red
light along with programmed dimming
to mimic dawn and dusk so they can
observe behavior of animals that are primarily active in twilight.
You Wouldn’t Do This
Historically, filters have been used in
cleanroom fixtures to produce red light.
The use of white and red light is then
automated to assure schedule conformity.
If one fixture must generate both white
and red light, one lamp in the fixture is
fitted with a red-filtered sleeve and a separate circuit, while another is left white.
The drawback? Filters reduce, but do not
eliminate, visible light. They still deliver
approximately 6% total light, with 1%
of that generated in the subject’s visible
range. Furthermore, over time the filter
degrades, allowing more visible light and
disturbing the animals.
