and Dr. Stefanie Schindler. The principal focus of the Center is to facilitate
‘Replacement’ concept of the 3R principle by introduction of alternative
models to animal experiments while
paving the way to achieve the following
• To promote and facilitate the use of
alternative models to replace animal
based experiments for education,
• To conduct free levying postgrad-
uate courses on laboratory animal
science with special reference to 3Rs
• To conduct short courses/workshops
on identified areas in laboratory animal science and use of alternatives.
“It is vital that young people are
familiar with and educated in the
concept of the 3Rs. The importance of
introducing and holding specialized
high-quality courses on the 3Rs in Sri
Lanka can hardly be overestimated.
The 3R concept not only promotes
research without animals, but also a
better understanding of their needs
and requirements as well as state-of-the art care and treatments,” Dr.

The TurnKey Innovations in the
3Rs Award was also given to Linear
Poisson Modelling, developed at the
University of Manchester, United
Kingdom. Linear Poisson Modeling is
an analysis technique that can make
efficient use of complex data. Its
primary purpose is making quantity
measurements for scientific applications. Originally developed for
planetary science, it has proven to
be highly useful in other areas, from
biochemistry to cancer studies.
In recently published work,
researchers at the University of
Manchester have demonstrated that
the approach can be up to 16 times as
efficient when compared to more conventional methods.
This gain in efficiency can translate to significant reductions in the
use of animals in experiments.
Linear Poisson Modeling, in conjunction with appropriate experimental design, has the potential to
contribute to all three areas of the
3Rs: the replacement, reduction, and
refinement of animal use in research.
